  42. Alright, I will add my 2 cents worth on this topic as a long term Amiga 
  43. fanatic that now owns a PC as well.

  45. Here is my opinion for whatever it is worth.

  47. The Amiga
  48.  
  49. PROS:  The best damn OS every created (3.1).  The ONLY machine that 
  50. still truly multitasks for under $10K.  It is the most versatile machine 
  51. ever created.  It can do whatever you need of it with the right software 
  52. and hardware.  If you want user power on the OS level, this is the RIGHT 
  53. machine.  One of the best stock machines for video work (get SCALA and 
  54. see what I mean).  The absolute BEST shareware market for any system.  
  55. You can own an Amiga and never buy commercial software and STILL have a 
  56. great system.
  57.  
  58. CONS: Incredibly crappy marketing, users who WON'T UPGRADE THEIR DAMN 
  59. SYSTEMS so we are all stuck playing vanilla A500 games from floppy, 
  60. companies that won't FORCE the users to upgrade (there are notable 
  61. exceptions).   People who own the Amiga technology (at any given time in 
  62. history) won't make use of it properly.  Its video handling was KICK ASS 
  63. in the 80's, now with all the polygon processors and chunky pixel 3D 
  64. games hitting the market (and taking the market) it is out of date.  GFX 
  65. cards help, but until AT makes a graphics card the STANDARD on the 
  66. Amiga, it will take the backseat to PC and playstation.  The need for 
  67. CDROM to be a STANDARD on the Amiga for about 6 years is killing the 
  68. hell out of the machine.  Take note.  I told this to Petro last July in 
  69. Pensylvannia, and I see nothing has changed.  DUP is committed to the CD 
  70. market - THAT is the future.  Better get the prices down too.

  72. The PC (Pentium based, 16 MB, 1 GIG, 1MB graphic card, SB 16 or better)

  74. PROS:  Damn but it plays a good game of Duke Nuke Em 3d!  I don't 
  75. remember the last time I had so much fun playing a computer game.  
  76. (Well, maybe Deluxe Galaga ;)  More software than you can shake a stick 
  77. at.  Global world-wide support.  I can actually walk into an EB and get 
  78. a copy of NIGHT TRAP if I want it.  FMV is finally getting it right - 
  79. PHANTASMAGORIA and SWAT are great examples - and these are actually FUN! 
  80.  Shootemups are even getting good - Tyrrian is awesome.  Hell, I even 
  81. saw BATTLE ARENA TOSHINDEN on the PC - and it was pretty damn good - 
  82. even on a P75.  There are even some decent utilities like GOLDWAVE and 
  83. PAINT SHOP PRO as well as ACDSEE Win95.  Internet software blows AWAY 
  84. anything currently on the Amiga.  No discussion required.  Plus, these 
  85. damn things just keep getting cheaper.

  87. The CONS:  Jeezus, can't you people EVER figure out how to make an OS??? 
  88.  Sure Win95 is a nice advance, but it is far from being worth its hard 
  89. drive space - I mean 52 megs?  And I left stuff OUT???  The sound 
  90. quality is still lacking (yes I have heard an Ultrasound from Gravis) 
  91. but still doesn't match the hi-fi out of my Amiga - wavetable synthesis 
  92. is pretty brilliant tho.  For those of you who wanted to argue earlier 
  93. about multitasking on the PC vs. Amiga above, just access drive A: in 
  94. Win95 and watch what happens:  the system grinds to a stop.  I can run 4 
  95. of them at a time with the Ami.  Granted, the PC doesn't use the floppy 
  96. much at the same time ...   Bloodthirsty and theivery in the 
  97. marketplace.  Any system that REQUIRED a ram doubler, memory manager, 
  98. graphics accelerators, etc etc wasn't built right to begin with.  These 
  99. bastards bleed the market every chance they get.  It really is a 
  100. conspiracy.  That is why I try and stay in the shareware market with the 
  101. PC.  Homey don't play dat.

  104. BOTTOM LINE:  The PC isn't as bad as it was about 3 years ago and if 
  105. they ever do something RIGHT with the OS, they very well might push the 
  106. Amiga right off the ledge.  PC is a great gaming and internet box, but 
  107. still leaves a lot to be desired in the OS.  The Amiga is the ultimate 
  108. power home box with extreme versatility but is getting old and no one 
  109. seems to want to reach out and help it (users included).  Expensive to 
  110. get into, but cheaper to 'maintain'.
